Traditional steel is created by melting and pouring, which can lead to microscopic inconsistencies. SG2 is a Powdered Metallurgy (PM) steel. The metal is atomized into a fine powder and fused under immense heat and pressure. This creates a perfectly uniform, incredibly fine-grained molecular structure.

  • Unreal Edge Retention: Because the grain structure is so tight and uniform, an SG2 edge takes a much longer time to degrade or roll compared to traditional stainless steels like VG-10.

Are SG2 and R2 the Same Steel?

Yes. Takefu Special Steel developed and manufactures the alloy as "Super Gold 2" (SG2). Kobelco Steel Corporation produces the exact same chemical composition and markets it under the name "R2." Blacksmiths use both names interchangeably based on their supplier, but the performance is identical.
