SG2 / R2 Takefu Specialty Steel
SG2 / R2 Powdered Metallurgy Steel Knives
If you are looking for the absolute pinnacle of modern stainless steel kitchen knives, you have found it. Super Gold 2 (SG2)—often referred to interchangeably as R2 steel—is a revolutionary powdered metallurgy steel developed by Takefu Special Steel. Capable of reaching an extraordinary hardness of up to 64 HRC, these blades offer a level of sharpness and edge retention previously thought impossible for a stainless knife.
The Tokushu Expert Take: The Ultimate "Safe Bet"
We tell our customers constantly: SG2 is the safest bet you can make if you want elite, high-end performance without the headache of rust. If you want a strict, low-maintenance "laser" that sharpens beautifully and holds a screaming sharp edge through weeks of heavy prep, SG2 is your answer. It is the uncompromising sweet spot between carbon steel performance and stainless steel convenience.
Why Choose SG2 / R2 Steel?
Traditional steel is created by melting and pouring, which can lead to microscopic inconsistencies. SG2 is a Powdered Metallurgy (PM) steel. The metal is atomized into a fine powder and fused under immense heat and pressure. This creates a perfectly uniform, incredibly fine-grained molecular structure.
- Unreal Edge Retention: Because the grain structure is so tight and uniform, an SG2 edge takes a much longer time to degrade or roll compared to traditional stainless steels like VG-10.
- The "Laser" Profile: The extreme hardness (60-64 HRC) allows master blacksmiths like Yu Kurosaki and Takamura to grind these knives incredibly thin behind the edge, allowing them to fall through dense root vegetables with zero wedging.
- Low Maintenance: Despite performing like a temperamental high-carbon blade, SG2 is highly corrosion-resistant. Simply wash it, dry it, and put it away.
Are SG2 and R2 the Same Steel?
Yes. Takefu Special Steel developed and manufactures the alloy as "Super Gold 2" (SG2). Kobelco Steel Corporation produces the exact same chemical composition and markets it under the name "R2." Blacksmiths use both names interchangeably based on their supplier, but the performance is identical.
