Makoto Kurosaki SG2 Bunka 240mm with Custom Prisma Handles
The Makoto Kurosaki SG2 Bunka 240mm is an unusual interpretation of the Bunka profile. At 240mm, it has the reach of a full-size Gyuto and the precision of a long K-tip. Makoto Kurosaki identifies the design as a Bunka, while some users may describe its proportions as a Kiritsuke-style Gyuto.
This Tokushu configuration pairs Makoto Kurosaki's SG2 blade with custom handles by Prisma Knife. Current variants include Amethyst Skull, Nebula Burl and Turquoise Aura; availability varies by handle.
Why Makoto Calls It a 240mm Bunka
Most Bunka knives are shorter, but this model extends the profile to 240mm for additional slicing length while retaining a flatter edge section and angular K-tip. It is suited to vegetables, herbs, boneless proteins, fish and long slicing cuts, while the fine tip supports detailed work.
SG2 Powder Steel
The core is made from SG2, also known as R2 powder steel. SG2 is valued for edge retention, high hardness, fine carbide structure and corrosion resistance. It can take a refined edge while requiring less maintenance than reactive carbon steels.
This is not a Damascus blade. The visible pattern comes from a hammered decorative finish across the upper blade. Below it, a soft Kasumi transition leads into a highlighted cladding line and polished cutting bevel.
Hammered Pattern, Kasumi Finish and Highlighted Cladding Line
The upper blade has a patterned hammered texture. The lower section transitions through a soft Kasumi finish before meeting the bright cladding line and exposed SG2 cutting core.
Current Prisma Handle Variants
Amethyst Skull: A custom Prisma Knife handle offered on this blade.
Nebula Burl: A custom Prisma Knife handle combining burl figure with resin.
Turquoise Aura: A custom Prisma Knife handle with turquoise-toned resin.
Each custom handle is installed as part of the Tokushu configuration. Check the variant selector for current availability.
Common Questions
Q: Is this really a Bunka?
A: Makoto Kurosaki calls it a Bunka, although some enthusiasts may classify the 240mm K-tip profile as a Kiritsuke-style Gyuto. The knife combines traits of both.
Q: Is the blade Damascus?
A: No. The visible pattern is a decorative hammered finish. The lower blade has a Kasumi treatment and highlighted cladding line rather than layered Damascus steel.
Q: What is SG2 steel known for?
A: SG2 is known for edge retention, refined sharpness and stainless convenience.
Q: Which handle should I choose?
A: Choose from the currently available Prisma variants according to your preferred color and material. Each handle is unique.
Care and Maintenance
Hand wash and dry immediately after use. Do not place the knife in a dishwasher or use it on bones, frozen food, glass, stone or ceramic boards. A Hasegawa Pro Cutting Board can help protect the fine SG2 edge. Light maintenance on the Tokushu Knife Premium XL Buffalo Leather Strop can extend the time between sharpenings, and our professional knife sharpening service is available for customers who want the edge refined before use.
