Overview
The Higonokami Blue #2 Medium is a traditional Japanese pocket knife with a carbon-steel blade and a folded brass handle. Made by Nagao Kanekoma in Miki, Hyogo, it brings a simple, compact design to everyday cutting tasks such as opening packages, trimming cord and sharpening pencils.
The Aogami carbon-steel core is supported by soft iron in a traditional warikomi construction. Its polished blade folds into a slim brass handle stamped with the maker's markings. The brass develops a patina with use, giving each knife its own character.
This is a non-locking friction folder. A riveted pivot and the projecting chikiri tang are part of its simple mechanism; it has no locking latch. Use controlled cutting pressure, keep fingers clear of the blade's closing path and avoid twisting or prying.
Common Questions
What is a Higonokami knife used for?
It is a compact utility knife for light, precise cutting: paper, packaging, cord and small craft tasks. The medium size is a practical choice for a workbench, tool kit or pocket-knife collection.
Does this folding knife lock open?
No. It is a traditional friction folder, not a locking knife. Familiarity with a non-locking blade is important before use.
Is Blue #2 steel stainless, and how do I care for it?
No. The carbon-steel blade and soft iron cladding can rust if left damp. Clean and dry the blade, pivot area and inside of the handle after use. Apply a thin coat of Tsubaki camellia oil before storage. Maintain the edge with a whetstone as needed and gentle, edge-trailing passes on a Tokushu Knife leather paddle strop between sharpenings. Do not soak or put it in a dishwasher.
