The description says this is essential and the description is not wrong. The biggest benefit is knuckle clearance when sharpening knives on whetstones. Synthetic whetstones aren't that tall so without this holder your knuckles will be dragging on the countertop when you sharpen your knife. I would dock off half a star because the holder sometimes slips on my counter. It's easily fixable by placing a damp towel or paper towel underneath the holder.
