Overview
The Nagao Kanekoma Higonokami Medium (65mm) is the definitive version of one of Japan’s most iconic blades — a minimalist friction-folder carried for more than 120 years. This model is produced by Nagao Kanekoma Seisakusho, the last remaining workshop in Japan legally permitted to use the registered trademark “Higonokami / 肥後守定駒.”
Simple, rugged, and endlessly satisfying to use, this medium-size Higonokami is the real thing — not a reproduction. Its hon-warikomi laminated construction, SK carbon-steel core, and blackened steel handle make it a timeless everyday carry tool.
Common Questions
Q: Is this knife good for everyday carry?
A: Yes. The compact 65mm blade is perfect for daily tasks like opening packages, trimming materials, or utility cutting. The friction-folder mechanism is simple, dependable, and designed for one-handed operation with the chikiri tab.
Q: How do I care for a carbon-steel Higonokami?
A: Carbon steel develops patina and can rust if left wet. Always wipe dry after use and occasionally apply a thin coat of oil (our Tsubaki Oil works perfectly). For edge maintenance, a light strop on our Tokushu XL Buffalo Leather Strop keeps it razor-sharp.
Q: What makes Nagao Kanekoma special?
A: They are the only legally recognized maker of true “Higonokami / 肥後守定駒” knives. Each piece is assembled by hand in Miki City, honoring more than a century of Japanese knife tradition.
