Takamura Chromax Santoku 170mm

Description:

Reputed blacksmiths, such as Terukazu Takamura, are the forces behind the renowned Takamura Hamono, based in Echizen. They are celebrated for crafting flawless knives that don't compromise on any detail. Each knife from Takamura, irrespective of its price point, stands out in terms of attractiveness and performance. Renowned Michelin-star chefs like René Redzepi of Noma and Massimo Bottura of Osteria Francescana are known patrons of Takamura knives.

The Chromax line from Takamura, despite its recent introduction, has quickly gained popularity in the knife world. The reason behind the hype is its outstanding characteristics, with the steel treated to HRC 64-65, ensuring excellent edge retention. It surpasses its counterpart, the SG2 steel, in terms of edge retention and is less reactive than a carbon steel knife. The Chromax line offers knives with laser-thin grinds, stainless cladding reminiscent of an Aogami Super kitchen knife, and a hand-hammered finish.

Then comes the santoku style, a classic that needs no reinvention. The Santoku, translating to the "knife of three virtues" [slice, dice, chop], is a versatile tool suitable for almost anyone. This style is particularly favored by those who prefer rock chopping or have limited kitchen space.

Best Value in the Game

For Father’s Day, they had this knife marked down to $85 and came with a free leather strop with purchase. Plus there was another 15% off deal going on, so for $72—I got a bad ass Takamura Chromax santoku, leather strop and a Tokushu felt lined blade guard. Literally can’t find that kind of value for this kind of quality anywhere else.

Outstanding starter knife

I got this knife to try to convince my wife that Japanese knives are better performers than the cheap knives she currently uses. I must say that the fit and finish of the knife is superb for the cost and it came extremely sharp out of the box. I have used it once and I’m impressed with the performance, great grind. Now to my wife, she has not told me anything about the knife but between you and me, she has stopped using her cheap knife and uses this daily. What I’m impressed with is this knife has not been thrown in the sink yet. It’s rinsed, wiped dry and she leaves it to dry before putting it away.
